Vulcan Steel Structures Rises to the Challenge at Clemson University

Vulcan Steel Structures excels at tackling projects others might find daunting, such as the Clemson University Facilities Center located in Seneca, SC. While other companies hesitated due to the complexity of insulated metal panels (IMPs), color changes, and specialized design requirements, Vulcan embraced the challenge.

The Clemson University Facilities Center supports operations across the university’s academic, housing, dining, and administrative sectors. Building B houses trades like locksmithing, carpentry, welding, HVAC, plumbing, and more, while Building C is the hub for storing and distributing maintenance supplies.

Vulcan’s expertise is evident in the use of DM40 insulated metal wall panels with Clemson Orange accents, reinforcing the university’s branding. The DL324 22-gauge standing seam roofing panels ensure weather resistance and compliance with FM Global Class 1A-105 standards. The roof’s R-35 Energy Saver liner insulation system also supports Clemson’s commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

From the project’s inception, Vulcan collaborated closely with J. Davis Construction to align the design with budget constraints, especially in accommodating specialized materials. Meticulous planning and communication ensured smooth execution, with meetings to refine delivery sequences and installation details.

This project highlights Vulcan’s ability to turn complex challenges into opportunities for excellence, creating a functional and visually striking facility that will serve Clemson University for years.

“It’s the technical part I love,” said Tony. While this may seem typical for many building companies, Tony believes Vulcan’s people set it apart. “I enjoy the family environment and the relationships we build across all levels—from sales and customer service to engineering and shop workers,” Tony said with a smile. “These relationships extend from the front door to the back door, reaching all the way to our customers in the field.”
Vulcan’s growth is fueled by employees like Tony. “I’m proud to work for a company that invests in the future,” he said. “With everything from facility renovations to the newest machines and equipment, Vulcan is poised for growth and is dedicated to both customer and employee success.” Tony has worn many hats in the metal building industry over the past 20 years and has spent the last five at Vulcan.

Tony and his wife, Shannon, have five children and enjoy traveling across the United States and Europe. On weekends, Tony can be found hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. He also participates in combat sports, perhaps channeling the fighting spirit of his grandfathers, both of whom were awarded Medals of Honor during World War II.

A common belief among Vulcan coworkers is that its people make Vulcan a great place to work.
